Did you know...
In a survey of teen drinkers, 65% said they got alcohol from family members or friends.
Most teens report that alcohol is easy to get – including 62 percent of eighth graders, 83 percent of sophomores, and 92 percent of seniors.
Marijuana smoke contains 50-70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.
Talking about difficult subjects like drinking, smoking, and drugs is not a five-minute talk. It’s about building an ongoing dialogue and taking advantage of teachable moments.
Students whose parents clearly expect their children to abstain are 400% more likely to abstain than other students.
If parents talk to children early and often about the dangers of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol before they are faced with difficult choices, they’ll be more likely to avoid rather than use.

  strategic plan:

In the fall of 2007, the most recent community assessment was conducted, followed by a strategic planning retreat. In response to community concerns, three focus areas were identified, and within those focus areas, strategies were created as follows:

  #1 Early Childhood

  • Increase the awareness and capacity of medical providers to intervene with mothers using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs during pregnancy.
  • Promote public awareness of the relationship between early childhood attachment/bonding and substance abuse prevention.
  #2 After School Activities

  • Promote community service activities to demonstrate that youth are part of the solution in reducing the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  #3 Public Awareness

  • Conduct a “Most of Us” media campaign around positive norm messaging highlighting issues of substance abuse.
  • North Hawaii Resource GuideBuild public awareness around the issue of “safe havens” for youth during non-school hours.
  • Build public awareness of available resources for families on Hawaii Island through a business card sized resource guide and an “advocacy” theme to be ready to help neighbors, friends and family.
  • Vendor compliance – Increased positive public recognition of compliant vendors resulting in decreased youth access to alcohol & tobacco.
  • Social Hosting – Work with local law enforcement and others to increase awareness of “Social Host Liability Laws.”
Environmental Strategies seek to change communities through:

  • Policies – set clear standards and laws. This includes government policies and business practices.
  • Enforcement – (lack of) undermines useful laws.
  • Public Awareness – targeted at families, business and community at large to change attitude and practice.
  • Communication – advertizing campaigns and public service announcements designed to change practice and attitudes.
  • Collaboration – joint effort results are more positive and long-lasting.
