Did you know...
In a survey of teen drinkers, 65% said they got alcohol from family members or friends.
Most teens report that alcohol is easy to get – including 62 percent of eighth graders, 83 percent of sophomores, and 92 percent of seniors.
Marijuana smoke contains 50-70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.
Talking about difficult subjects like drinking, smoking, and drugs is not a five-minute talk. It’s about building an ongoing dialogue and taking advantage of teachable moments.
Students whose parents clearly expect their children to abstain are 400% more likely to abstain than other students.
If parents talk to children early and often about the dangers of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol before they are faced with difficult choices, they’ll be more likely to avoid rather than use.

  Youth SOlutions:

“Youth Solutions” feature NHDFC partner organizations that offer opportunities for positive use of kids time and energy which builds stronger self-esteem. This promotes development of greater refusal skills when faced with the temptations of underage drinking and substance abuse. It is important to have peer to peer relationships that promote healthy activities and self-assured personal decision making.

Roots Skatepark
Our mission is to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on helping children. We do this by promoting high quality, public skateparks throughout the state of Hawaii.

Youth on the island of Hawaii are facing a diminishing recreational environment and subsequently fewer opportunities to occupy free time and avoid the growing epidemic of substance abuse. Click here for more information.

Waikoloa Skatepark Project
Waikoloa Village is a residential community with lots of working families and Keiki everywhere!

Waikoloa Community Development Corp is the non-profit support system for fundraising and building the Skatepark in the newest county park in Waikoloa – Kamakoa Nui. WCDC’s mission is to “improve the quality of life and advance the common good for everyone living in the greater Waikoloa area”.

The Skatepark project began in 2003 as a “safe haven” project for youth to provide a place for healthy outdoor activity within the village. Click here for more information.

From Kids For Kids

Does your back-to-school shopping include new backpacks and clothes? Are last year’s still in good shape? Just drop off “gently used” stuff at the FK4K zone and we’ll pass it on to other kids who want to look good and feel ready for school. It’s easy, and knowing it comes from another kid makes a big difference. Click here for more information.

The Hamakua Youth Foundation
The Hamakua Youth Foundation (HYF) is a community based organization whose mission is creating no-fee, nurturing youth services programs for ages ten through eighteen during non-school hours, engaging youth in environmental sustainability and stewardship, providing Hawaiian culture and arts education, developing youth leadership, and connecting youth and their families with local social services agencies.
